Statement on Afghanistan by UNAC-USA

Perhaps we were not prepared for the rapid fall of the US supported Afghan government and forces because we have not been told the truth throughout the 20-year occupation and war. The US supposedly went into Afghanistan to capture Osama Bin Laden who they held responsible for the attacks on 9/11. The Taliban government said they would turn him over to an international court if shown proof of his involvement, but rather than do that, the US attacked and occupied the country and turned the government over to a group of war lords from the Northern Alliance. That was supposed to bring democracy to Afghanistan. Twenty years later the Taliban has returned stronger than ever.

July 19 rally in Toronto demanding “End the U.S. blockade of Cuba Now!”

Up to 200 people demanding "End the U.S. blockade of Cuba Now!" rallied across the street from the U.S. Consulate in Toronto on a very humid July 19 afternoon.  The attached video, which is a bit rough, shows speeches to the gathering by Barry Weisleder for Socialist Action, and well as by representatives of the Canadian Peace Congress, the Palestinian Youth Movement, the Canadian Cuba Friendship Association, the Latin American and Caribbean Solidarity Network, the Toronto Venezuela Solidarity Coalition and the Communist Party of Canada. Partisans of revolutionary Cuba picketed and chanted for over an hour on busy University Avenue.  Police confined a crew of right wing, anti-Cuba government demonstrators, numbering less than fifty, to a spot half a block to the south.  Leftists and progressives in solidarity with the Cuban workers' state clearly won this round.

China and the Uyghur question

At the centre of the diplomatic, trade and public relations offensive by the western powers against China is the alleged maltreatment of the Uyghur minority in the western-most Chinese province of Xinjiang. Xinjiang covers 18% of China’s land mass but has a population of only 27 million out of the 1.5 billion in China as a whole.  48% of Xinjiang’s population are Uyghurs down from 80% in 1949. Han Chinese constitutes another 40% after several decades of steady migration.   The remainder are other Muslim minorities, Mongols, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz and Tajiks.

The Leninist Party and the Left

V.I. Lenin, and his famous book “What is to Be Done?”, are hated by the entire political establishment.  Even scholars who consider themselves Marxists are uncomfortable with Lenin.  Why?  Because Lenin built a party that led a socialist revolution.  He proved that workers could overthrow capitalism.

Socialist Action at mass rally and march in solidarity with the people of Palestine, Saturday, May 22, starting at Dundas Square in Toronto

Following a brief rain shower, thousands gathered at Toronto's Dundas Square to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian people.  This was just hours after the Zionist war machine announced a cease-fire in the bombardment of Gaza, reflecting the global political isolation of the Israeli Apartheid state.  Palestinians are united in their resolve to fight for freedom, for an end to the Occupation and other miseries inflicted on them daily, for generations, since the Nakba 73 years ago.
