Thousands Denounce Carney’s CEO Summit

By Barry Weisleder
A fabulous rally and march of over 2,000 in Toronto on September 14 focused public attention on the opposition to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s CEO Summit and his naked privatization agenda.  Major commercial media provided extensive coverage of the events, plus interviews with organizers, live and recorded.

The protest was initiated by Capitalism Can’t be Fixed, including Socialist Action/Ligue pour l’Action socialiste.  CCbF forged an alliance with a wide range of Indigenous, environmentalist and labour organizations summoned by the coalition Many Versus the Money.

Many protesters wore creative costumes that mocked Carney’s billionaire friends.  They marched from Toronto City Hall, west along Queen Street, and north on McCaul which was blockaded by hundreds of heavily armed cops on foot, in squad cars, and on horseback just south of the Art Gallery of Ontario where the opening gala dinner of the ruling rich was held.

Pointing at police, the crowd chanted “This is not what democracy looks like!”  They demanded “Money for healthcare, NOT for war”, “Money for housing, NOT for war”, “Canada Out of NATO and Norad”, and “Abolish billionaires.”
