On Saturday, March 16 over a thousand people rallied and marched in Toronto, and thousands more did the same across the country, from P.E.I. to B.C. to demand Status for All for Migrant Workers.
As Hussan Syed of the Migrant Workers’ Alliance told the gathering at its second stop along the route from Christie Park to Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland’s office on Bloor Street West at Spadina, “Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised that by Spring 2024, migrant workers would be ‘regularized’ as permanent residents.” They should no longer subject to deportation, especially when they speak up for proper pay, plus access to health and education services. “Well, it’s Spring, Trudeau, so keep your promise!”
Joining the throng were people carrying flags, signs and banners representing the Ontario Nurses’ Association, the Ontario Public Service Employees’ Union, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers, the Chinese Association of Downtown Toronto, numerous Latin American and Filipino organizations, the Workers’ Action Center, and Socialist Action.
Many participants wore keffiyeh and waved Palestinian flags. It was a spirited action with street dancing to rhythmic music and constant chanting, notwithstanding the chilly breeze that swept the midtown. Members of Socialist Action distributed hundreds of leaflets and sold scores of ‘End the Occupation, Free Palestine’ buttons. Thanks to Rubina Chowdhury for the photos below.
