The Toronto Socialist Action Pre-Labour Day Social featured the theme:

Put the Movement Back into Labour!

By Barry Weisleder

Held on Saturday, September 5, the gathering at 320 College Street enjoyed stirring speeches by Cuban Consul General Victor Manuel Garcia Sanchez; OPSEU Local 540 activists Patricia Crooks and Nicole Samms; Socialist Action leading member and OPSEU Local 532 president Julius Arscott; event chair and retired CUPW activist Elizabeth Byce; plus the powerful music and poetry of Sigfried Echo Hemming.

The event was great preparation for the annual Labour Day Parade on Monday, September 7 with over 20,000 union members participating.  Socialist Action staffed a book display table under the Workers’ Power canopy situated near the end of the parade route.

A leading contingent expressed solidarity with 4,000 OPSEU social workers waging an inspiring sectoral strike for decent wages, secure jobs and properly funded services.  Stop Doug Ford’s provincial government cuts and privatization!  Dump Thug Ford with a general strike!  Class War, not Trade War!  Confront Carney’s CEO Summit on Sept. 14!
