Another year of wars, genocide, climate catastrophe and cost of living woes is behind us. But it has also been a year of strikes and mass social justice movements, such as global pro-Palestinian solidarity. So, it’s time to reflect, time to replenish our resources. Inspiring are the signs of a revival of the workers’ movement, including new union-organizing efforts, the current postal workers’ strike, and the earlier walk-outs by railroad and dockworkers sadly interrupted by anti-democratic legislation. The aim of this New Year’s Fund Appeal is to raise over $5,000 between now and February 28, 2025, to enable Socialist Action to rise to the challenges ahead. We seek to enlist your support for building a larger, more effective, non-sectarian, socialist working class party.
It is no small irony that the opportunity to build a better future arises from the growing threat of nuclear annihilation, the crisis of capitalist ‘democracy’, and persistent health emergencies. Capitalist politicians claim to care about people — even as they push oil pipelines, trample the rights of Indigenous people, and market weapons of mass destruction. Their response to inflation is high interest rates that induce mass job losses. Inequality surges. Vile demagogues stoke fears. They intensify racism, sexism and transphobia. They promote tyranny. They wage wars of imperialist plunder. Human civilization is genuinely at risk. The choice is Socialism or Extinction. If we are to survive, revolutionary change must be won on an urgent basis. But it won’t happen spontaneously; it won’t happen without clear, uncompromising revolutionary working class leadership.
Socialist Action does not have a magic blueprint. But we do stand on many generations of global political experience and sound principles, 176 years since the Communist Manifesto. The first point is workers’ self-organization and mass mobilization, independent of the capitalist parties and their state. Another is unity in action, via the workers’ united front tactic.
What will SA do with the money that you generously donate? We will fund our organizers across the country, support direct action campaigns, facilitate our participation in conferences abroad, solidarity events and delegations, and strengthen SA social media platforms. Thousands of people visited www.socialistaction.ca this year. Higher visibility will enable us to build new branches across the Canadian state, publish more booklets, create more banners, flags and placards, and field more candidates in city elections.
In 2023 we launched the SA monthly journal The Red Review. The full e-version is on-line, and a selection of articles is printed for sale at meetings, demonstrations and on literature tables. It covers major events, historical landmarks, theoretical questions, and it presents the SA view on significant debates on the left. It is a valuable means of educating SA members and leftward moving workers and militants in the many struggles of the oppressed.
Are we in a hurry? Frankly, yes! Time is constrained to save humanity and nature from capitalist catastrophe. But with your help, there is a much better chance of survival – even to make a betterworld. So, what do you say?
