Protest in Toronto marks 300 Days of Genocide

August 3, 2024 | Socialist Action

Hundreds gathered at the iconic downtown Toronto intersection of Yonge and Dundas on August 1 to protest 300 Days of Zionist Genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza and the Occupied Territories.

The crowd condemned the Zionist assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, targeted in Iran’s capital Tehran, and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Beirut, Lebanon.  These acts of bloody murder beyond the borders of the Zionist state show the contempt for peace negotiations on the part of the Israeli rulers.  Also evident is the complicity of Washington and its allies in Ottawa and the European Union.

In a bizarre side-note to the event, Dominic Cardy, an independent member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, a former Conservative Minister of Education who defected to the Tories from the NB New Democratic Party in 2017, tried to disrupt the pro-Palestinian rally in Toronto by shouting from an elevated spot “Free Palestine from Hamas.”  His ongoing provocative behaviour prompted police to take Cardy away.

The rally, featuring rhythmic chants “Stop the Killing Now”, “End the Occupation” and “From the River to the Sea, Palestine Will Be Free”, held the intersection for well over an hour.
