Premier Susan Holt betrayed workers in record time by directing school districts to eliminate library workers and other education support positions across the province. At a time when New Brunswickers rely so much on good paying unionized jobs to cope with the rising cost of living, the Liberal provincial government seems not to care one little bit whether our people are abandoned to live on the street.
Just as callous is the betrayal of future generations. No doubt you’ve heard bad faith arguments professing that we don’t “need” library staff. Lies! Library staff are the #1 research support system our students have. In 2025 we need MORE people helping students to find and understand accurate information. Susan Holt seems prepared to forsake them to their imagination, and whatever lies Artificial Intelligence companies choose to preach in their place. Socialist Action stands with workers. We stand with everyone in New Brunswick who values a decent, substantial public education. This shotgun approach of cutting everything possible in the early days of a new political term in office, in the hope that we will forget by the time of the next election, is dead on arrival. We will neither forget nor forgive.
The present cuts (eliminating 49 Library positions at a saving of less than $950,000) can be halted and reversed only by the working class, led by the labour movement, taking mass protest action – up to and including a general strike.
