A sea of Palestinian and Lebanese flags filled the intersection of Dundas and Yonge Streets on October 5, proceeding from Dundas Square to the Zionist Consulate on Bloor, and then back down to College Street. This is how anti-war protesters marked the year-long genocide unleashed against Gaza, the West Bank, and most recently featuring the bombing and invasion of Lebanon.
Palestinian Youth Movement spokespersons said the march was the largest in Toronto in months, with support from 85 organizations including labour unions and student groups. Socialist Action staffed a display table and participated in the demonstration which the PYM estimated at 30,000. It dwarfed a tiny counter-rally by 20 Israeli flag bearers. Police, who tried to interfere with leftists who set up tables at the square, retreated after the crowd gathered in its thousands. “Hands Off the Middle East” and “Ceasefire Now” were among the chants that echoed between the downtown towers.
