Hundreds of members of the Bangladeshi community rallied and marched on Danforth Avenue near Victoria Park to demonstrate solidarity with the Palestinian people and to demand an immediate ceasefire in the cruel Zionist state assault on Gaza and the West Bank. The October 28 gathering in the heart of Bangladeshi Toronto was part of the global groundswell of opposition to the Israeli military genocide, particularly murderous in its suffocating siege, bombing onslaught and ground offensive against the beleaguered residents of Gaza.
Socialist Action spoke to the east-side crowd, and took issue with the support by a speaker who rationalized past loyalty to the local Liberal Party MP. SA confronted the New Democratic Party MPP Dolly Begum who presently refused to address the expulsion of pro-Palestinian MPP Sarah Jama from the NDP caucus in the Ontario Legislature on October 23. Jama was censured by the Conservative-ruled provincial assembly, just minutes after ONDP leader Marit Stiles removed Jama from the party group of MPPs at Queen’s Park.
Socialist Action announced that the Municipal Socialist Alliance is currently contesting the Scarborough Southwest Ward 20 by-election with candidate Corey David, a young member of the Amalgamated Transit Union who for years has campaigned for Palestinian, Indigenous and workers’ rights. Participants at the rally purchased and promptly wore some 80 SA buttons bearing the slogan “End the Occupation, Free Palestine.”
Event organizers pledged to continue demonstrating for a ceasefire and to demand an End to the Zionist Apartheid state.
Free, Free Palestine. From the River to the Sea, Palestine will be Free!
