Seventy-six years ago the United Nations, led by a cabal of western imperial powers and the Stalinist regime atop the USSR, gouged a colonial-settler state out of the living Palestinian homeland on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The Nakba, or catastrophe, forced the expulsion of over 700,000 Arab people. It destroyed hundreds of their villages between the Jordan River and the sea. On May 11, 2024 rallies and marches around the world demanded an end to the unfolding Zionist genocide, a halt to trade with Apartheid Israel and affirmed the right of all those displaced since 1948 to return home. The goal is a democratic and secular Palestine for all its inhabitants.
On Saturday over two thousand people rallied across from the U.S. Consulate on Toronto’s University Avenue to protest the latest atrocities by the Zionist state. Israeli Occupation Forces are bomb battering and waging a brutal land assault on Rafah in southern Gaza. To the beat of multiple drums, the keffiyeh-wearing crowd chanted “Hands Off Rafah”, “Ceasefire Now”, “Free, Free Palestine” and “Trudeau, Biden, What do you say? How many kids did you kill today?”
The display table under the Socialist Action canopy was a veritable hub of discussion, leaflet distribution and literature sales. Over $220 in revenue resulted from purchases of “End the Occupation” buttons, books, booklets and copies of the SA monthly journal The Red Review.
