SA at the Climate Justice Rally November 6 in Toronto

Hundreds of climate justice advocates rallied at Toronto's Queen's Park on Saturday, November 6.  They gathered in solidarity with tens of thousands who paraded through the streets of Glasgow, the Scottish city hosting the UN climate summit. Around the world, people took action to demand that governments act meaningfully to reduce the use of climate-warming fossil fuels that damage the planet. Socialist Action's banner "Eco-socialism or Extinction", beside the SA canopy and literature display in Toronto, was a busy hub as dozens of people stopped to take photos, buy booklets and buttons, and sign up for more information.

Peel Socialist Action Municipal Election 2022 Rally on October 16, 2021

On Saturday, October 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. Peel Socialist Action members hosted a street corner rally complete with literature display, canopy, sound system and distribution of the new SA municipal election 2022 leaflet.  Peel and Toronto SA members greeted public transit commuters at Hurontario and Dundasstreets, site of the famous Four Corners, at the intersection of highways #5 and #10, in Mississauga (Cooksville). A number of folks stopped by, listened to spoken words and protest music, bought literature and buttons and signed up for more information.  While the afternoon began with an intermittent drizzle and windy conditions, those soon gave way to glorious sunshine.  Passing motorists honked in solidarity with the gathering.

Climate Crisis march in Toronto:  Eco Socialism or Extinction!

On September 24, 2021 over a thousand environmental activists took to the streets of Toronto as part of a worldwide climate strike. The event, organized by Fridays for Future, shouted "Save Our Planet" loud and clear.  The protesters, including students, workers, women and children, walked together to end violence against the nature, the planet and humanity.  Students carried signs and banners: "We Need a Revolution", "Stop the Lies, Stop Funding Crisis, No Planet B".  A large black banner "Code Red" led the march. Environmentalists are furious due to inaction by capitalist politicians.  Burning of fossil fuel is the primary cause of global warming today. While most climate deniers changed their position from denial to acceptance, the problem remains unsolved. Most Canadian provinces are in the process of banning straws and polythene bags -- too late to make a tangible difference.

Do not Abandon People on ODSP and OW.  Act now!

On Saturday, September 18, 2021, a small crowd rallied in Toronto at the Yonge and Dundas intersection calling for an end to discriminatory funding to ODSP and OW programs. POOF Protecting ODSP OW Funding is a community group striving to end Homelessness and Poverty for people on ODSP, Ontario Disability Support Program and OW, Ontario Works benefits. The event organizer, Isabella Gamk, said that people on ODSP and OW benefits are abandoned by all 3 levels of Canadian Government and left to fend for themselves with less than a livable income support. Sadly, the City of Toronto has no tangible plans to help marginalized people living on a poverty income.

Toronto Protest of Police Violence, mass arrests and encampment evictions

Over two hundred people rallied at Toronto City Hall on July 26 to protest police violence and the arrest of more than two dozen people a week earlier. The brutal cop assault on defenders of an encampment of homeless folks involved the wanton use of truncheons, pepper spray, charges on horseback, punches and choke holds. Among the arrested at 14 Division police station was Corey David, the Socialist Action candidate in the city by-election in Scarborough-Agincourt in January.

July 19 rally in Toronto demanding “End the U.S. blockade of Cuba Now!”

Up to 200 people demanding "End the U.S. blockade of Cuba Now!" rallied across the street from the U.S. Consulate in Toronto on a very humid July 19 afternoon.  The attached video, which is a bit rough, shows speeches to the gathering by Barry Weisleder for Socialist Action, and well as by representatives of the Canadian Peace Congress, the Palestinian Youth Movement, the Canadian Cuba Friendship Association, the Latin American and Caribbean Solidarity Network, the Toronto Venezuela Solidarity Coalition and the Communist Party of Canada. Partisans of revolutionary Cuba picketed and chanted for over an hour on busy University Avenue.  Police confined a crew of right wing, anti-Cuba government demonstrators, numbering less than fifty, to a spot half a block to the south.  Leftists and progressives in solidarity with the Cuban workers' state clearly won this round.

Socialist Action and Indigenous activists demanded “De-fund the Police” at Toronto cop HQ on June 3

Socialist Action stands in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples who are grieving and re-traumatized due to the discovery of an undocumented grave at the site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School (IRS) on the territory of the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation.  Buried there are the bodies of 215 children and youth killed at this IRS during its operation.  And it is only the tip of the iceberg.  We demand immediate implementation of all recommendations of the 2015 report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in particular the six specific Calls to Action (71-76) under the heading “Missing Children and Burial Information.”
