Municipal Socialist Alliance Candidates Earn More Than 14,000 Votes Combined Across Ontario in 2022 Elections

The fledgling Municipal Socialist Alliance exceeded most expectations by garnering 14,870 votes across Ontario, despite getting almost zero coverage in the commercial mass media, amid a very low voter turnout to boot (about 29 percent in Toronto). Official Municipal Socialist Alliance candidates ran for city council, school board, and, in one city, for the office of mayor.

End Student Military Recruitment at the Ontario College Information Fair | October 19th

On Wednesday, October 19th, the Canadian Armed Forces are holding a recruitment event at the Ontario College Information Fair at the Enercare Center in downtown Toronto. Socialist Action and the Municipal Socialist Alliance are committed to civil and non-violent direct action and plan to disrupt this recruitment event by exposing the reality of war. We demand the Canadian armed forces end student recruitment, and move to disarm and demilitarize in the face of what is an impending extinction-level climate catastrophe. Click for more information.

Crisis, War, Pomp, and Polarization open the Autumn of 2022

Pierre Poilevre, the hard right-wing career politician, captured the federal Conservative Party leadership with 70.7% of the votes cast on September 10, 2022.  This result reveals that a significant faction of the Canadian ruling class wants to pursue an aggressive austerity agenda, albeit under the populist guise of cutting taxes, while fanning the flames of bigotry and promoting conspiracy theories.

Interviews With TSSA Strikers

Nearly 200 members of OPSEU Local 546 are on strike against the Technical Standards and Safety Authority in Ontario.  These front line workers inspect elevators, ski lifts, food trucks and amusement park rides.  They check fuel-burning equipment, boilers and pressure vessels, as well as gas stations, propane dispensing stations and nuclear power plants.  They are on strike because the TSSA, an agency that works at arms length from the provincial government, has been trying to make do with fewer safety inspectors, less regular inspections and less accountability.  The workers need and deserve a wage catch-up.

Danny Drew is a non-binary activist running to be mayor of Guelph. Born and raised in Oshawa, they moved to attend the University of Guelph in 2009, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. Danny worked in a wide range of jobs, always encouraging co-workers to exercise their rights and push for unionization. Currently seeking to win rights for thousands of workers via reclassification, they’ve supported many striking workers on picket lines.
