Members of Socialist Action in Toronto participated in the Save Constitution Save Democracy rally at Queens Park on January 26, 2020 organized by Indo-Canadians for Humanity. See below a statement which was distributed to attendees of the rally.
Dear Comrades and Friends,
I am speaking on behalf of Socialist Action, to convey our militant solidarity with the global movement for human rights and social justice in India.
We express, through you, Indo-Canadians, our solidarity with the millions of your brothers and sisters in India who are in struggle against an increasingly repressive, autocratic regime – in Shaheen Bagh, in Jantar Mantar, Jamia Millia, Mangalore, Dispur, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Meerut, Kanpur, Firozabad, JNU, AMU, Bhuvaneswar, and Mumbai. The current very powerful and inspiring movement extends to almost every town and city across India.
We humbly extend our homage to the 27 martyrs, which includes 3 minors, of this struggle against the CAA, against the NRC/NPR movement. They died bravely at the hands of armed police, or from the brazen attacks of fascist goons.
We understand that the people of India are passing through a critical historical juncture. The limited degree of freedom that the Indian people achieved under capitalist rule, after waging more than a hundred years of heroic struggle against British imperialism, is now under threat. The constitution of India, adopted under the leadership of famous bourgeois national leaders, is being grossly violated by the contemporary political establishment.
The dreams of the great martyrs of the Indian freedom movement – Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Jatin Das, Ashfaq Ulla Khan, Udham Singh, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and his Soldiers of the Indian National Army… the dream of a sovereign, socialist, democratic, republic was never realized. The Indian constitution promised it. But you know better than I. What happened? What is the reality on the ground? Profound inequality, compounded by growing corporate tyranny.
Here, in Canada, the Justin Trudeau government pretends to be progressive, even feminist, as it caters to the giant polluters, sells deadly weapons to Saudi Arabia, supports Zionist apartheid, and is best friends with the ultra-reactionary government of Narendra Modi.
We repudiate the hypocrite Trudeau and the imperialist class he serves. We demand Canada Out of NATO. Break sharply with the Modi regime. We are with you in the struggle to realize the dreams of the freedom fighters of India.
Socialist Action is a Marxist-Leninist-Trotskyist party. We campaign to push the unions to the left, to organize the unorganized, and to Dump the Doug Ford government with a General Strike.
We stand for proletarian internationalism. We act in solidarity with the working class and for movements of the oppressed around the world.
Smash the CAA. Down with the caste system, the class system, and the Modi government. For Eco-socialism and feminism! Workers to Power!
